Pastor John Bonk

He is the serving as vacancy Pastor at Shepherd of the Lake.  John graduated from Concordia Seminary in St. Louis in 1987.  His first parish was Redeemer Lutheran Church in Aurora, Mn.  He then served Good Shepherd Lutherean Church in Babbitt, Mn starting in 1997.  In 2001 Good Shepherd formed a partnership with First Lutheran in Ely, Mn.  He served both of these churches until January 2014.

John has been the vacancy pastor Shepherd of the Lake since March of 2014.  He currently lives in Two Harbors.  He served as chaplain to the St. Louis County Sheriffs for three years.   He is currently working to establish a chaplaincy for police and emergency workers in Lake County now that he lives here.

John believes that scripture is God's inspired and innerrant Word.  And that Scripture is written that we may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God.  And that by believing we may have life in His name.  His philosophy of ministry revolves around witness, mercy and life together. "We a called to be His witnesses, which means our lives, word and deed, should point to a savior who lived, died and rose agin that we might be the children of God."  "His mercies are everlasting to each of us God has been, is and will be merciful, therefore we cannot help but show that same mercy to all those around us."  "God call us to be one people as disciples of Jesus and that life together is centered the forgiveness of sins he freely gives us in Jesus."

"I came to know the Lord Jesus through reading the Gospels back in 1979.  Through God's amazing word I came to know my Savior Jesus.  That amazing grace which was revealed to me through His Word is why I became a pastor.  My goal is always to share that Jesus who lived, died, rose again and will return with anyone who is interested.  That God's love took my sins and not only mine but the sins of the whole world and layed them on His Son, Jesus  that we could be His children, part of God's eternal kingdom is the motivating force in my service of Him.
